And the Wall Begins...
By Sarah Lampasona
China Globe
NORTH GREAT WALL-- Qin Shi Huang, Emperor of China, declared a wall to be built to protect China from the Mongols. Qin is making people who irritated him, scholars, criminals, peasants, and captured enemies work on the Great Wall. Qin thinks there will be around 3,000 people in the outcome that will work on the wall in the end. Just remember, its only the 21st century BC and people could be farming or making silk instead.
A few weeks ago the China was invaded from the Northern Boarders of China by Mongolians. The reason to invade is to expand their territory before it is to late to take over China and gain any riches that the Chinese had to share with them. Mongolia was short on food because Mongolia was made up mostly of deserts. But after the invasion they gained more food, because China has rivers, like the Yangtze River which provides water, and the shores contained good soil for farming.
Bao Yu Chun, a Scholar, thinks that building the wall will make China even stronger. She thinks that if China builds a wall it will make the Mongolians travel further to try and invade, and by the time they are close to invading someone in China will see them and get the soldiers ready to fight. She says she is willing to help work on the wall but if she had a choice she would want to be a stone mender.
Chang Chun, a man who is going to be forced to work on the wall, thinks the wall isn’t going to help at all. He thinks that the Mongols are still going to invade. He has a feeling that the wall isn’t going to keep them safe. He feels that since the Mongolians already invaded once they will think they have more power then they really do and try just as hard to invade again. “Qin is forcing people to work on the wall. They have no choice, its like they are under a spell. Qin seems to think this wall will keep the Chinese in China and the Mongols out.” says Chang Chun.
Opinion Editorial
The Great Wall: a Big Mistake?
Emperor
Qin wishes for protection. The Mongolians have recently invaded China
from the Northern Border. Emperor Qin has come up with an idea to build a
Wall. Not just any wall, but the Great Wall. Qin thinks the wall will
protect China from multiple enemies.
The
Wall should not be built. If the wall is built it is not definite that
no enemies will be able to invade. There will still be a chance that
enemies will find a way to get into China.
With
this wall being built almost everyone will be forced to work on it. Qin
will just stand there while everyone else works as hard as they can
just for protection. The cost of protection is not worth it. The
building of the wall takes away more lives than it saves. People are
dying because of lack of food, and also they are dying because of the
forced labor they must do.
In order to get people to work on the wall they are forced to leave their family. Who would want to leave their family until the wall is built? To leave your family for that long would maybe even mean never seeing them again.
There are a few good things that the wall does, including provide more jobs. If there are more jobs then fewer people will have to be farmers. Although jobs on the wall may not be the greatest they are better then not having a job. Thinking about how many jobs the wall creates makes you think of all the people who will lose them when the wall is done being built.
With the wall China would be more protected so there would be no need for as many soldiers as China has now. Without the need for as many soldiers many people would loose jobs.

The Qin Dynasty: Map
This is China now. |
The map of China
has changed in many ways since the Qin Dynasty. The Qin Dynasty was smaller
than China is now. The Qin Dynasty was on the East side in Ancient China.
Before the Qin Dynasty was the Warring state. The Warring states had more space
than the Qin Dynasty. The Warring States had seven main parts. The main parts
were Yan, Zhao, Qi, Wei, Chu, Han and Qin. Emperor Qin conquered the Warring
States. The Qin state eventually gained enough power to take over all other six
states. Later the Qin dynasty soon became the first imperial dynasty in China.
These are the Warring States, which were before the Qin Dynasty. |
This is the Qin Dynasty. The Qin Dynasty came after the Warring States. |
Interview
Interview
with: Bao Feng
Q: Think back to before the wall was being built, did you have a job? And if so what was it?
A: Before the Wall was being built I had a job. I was a farmer. I had my own farm and on that farm I would grow rice. My Farm was owned by me and my Family. Since we didn’t live in the big city, we had had to be farmers because we couldn’t travel all the way to the big city each day for work. Plus when I was little I grew up on a farm so it was a way to connect with my parents and the rest of my family.
Q: When the building of the wall began did you volunteer to help build it, or were you forced?
A: Well, at the time I agreed that the building of the wall was a good idea. I had agreed it was a good idea so I volunteered to help with the building. Little did I know that so many people were going to die, and there was going to be such bad conditions. The thought behind volunteering was that it would keep my Family and close ones safe.
Q: While you were building the wall do you feel that the conditions were good or bad overall?
A: While I was working on the wall I would have to say the conditions were bad. We only got enough food to keep us alive. We weren’t allowed to see our family, unless of coarse they worked on the wall also. We had to work 24/7 without stopping, and if we stopped punishments were as bad a death.
Q: Did you ever think about committing suicide instead of working on the wall?
A: Never. I never thought of committing suicide while working on the wall. Life meant to much for me. I had a family that loved and cared for me so there was no need to commit suicide. In fact I convinced a really good friend of mine not to convince suicide. I told him conditions were going to get better even though i knew they were not.
Q: When you first heard about the wall being built did you agree to it or where you against it?
A: I didn’t have to think through my thought of the wall. I wanted the wall to be built. The wall had many reasons to be built. One reason was to protect everyone in China from invaders. Without the wall we were getting invaded very often. We also figured that the wall would bring lots of jobs to China. Little did we know the conditions were going to be as bad as they were. The wall does keep out invaders now that it is built, but for all the lives that were lost I don’t think it was worth it in the outcome.
Inventions
Streets are used for travel. Streets at this time were used in other parts of the world, not only China. Streets changed peoples lives in China because instead of having people walk on the bare ground and not having a main pathway to get to places now they were able to get from point A to point B without needing to go out of their way. The roads were also used to send armies to various locations to protect China. Some streets that were made in the Qin Dynasty still stand today. You can find some of these roads in Dengjiatang Village, in Chenzhou City, in the providence.
Streets today are used just like streets during the Qin Dynasty. They are used for travel. Houses are lined up along streets, people can walk, ride a bike, take a bus, or drive on roads. Roads have many different things they can be used for. Roads today are built out of concrete and have lines painted on them for drivers.
